Life's Influences and Journeys
Early boyhood days being endlessly thrilled by the wildlife (especially waterfowl) of Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, along with the monthly field naturalist outings.
Struggling with biological science degree at LaTrobe University, Melbourne during the carefree and 'heady' Gough Whitlam era.
After 15 years drifting in Adelaide, World Heritage listed rainforests and 'alternate folk' of the New South Wales far north coast beckoned.
A book by the great Canadian artist/naturalist Robert Bateman was salvaged from termites whilst in storage. First serious painting attempted in 1986, I still have it since it was a copy of a Bateman painting.
Co-founded the Tweed Birds Observers Club in 1999 .... still going strong as Birdlife Northern Rivers.
Currumbin Wildlife Sancuary 'artist-in-residence' 2007/08 and teaching wildlife art for kids.
Project co-ordinator, Dept Industry & Regional Development, NSW State Govt., Caldera Art travelling exhibitions (from 2009-2014 visiting 5 local government areas) and facilitating over 150 participating artists during those years.
Developing the Caldera Art Gallery within World Heritage Rainforest Centre, along the banks of the Tweed River in Murwillumbah in 2008. Unfortunately the record flood event of March 2017 forced its permanent closure.
Tweed Shire Council Australia Day Achievement Award, Community Arts & Culture 2010.
Resident art tutor, Caldera Art Gallery, 2011-2016.
The culmination (so far) of having spent the last twenty years absorbing myself in the geography of the caldera region, was the coordination and contribution as principal artist of the Green Cauldron Panorama, an 18 metre long painting depicting the 360 degree view from the summit of Wollumbin Mt Warning.
Artist-in-residence, Binna Burra Mountain Lodge in Lamington National Park, 2014-2015.
The establishment of the Caldera Wildscapes Gallery and relocation of the Panorama after the flood event of March 2017 was indeed a 'life-changing' excercise.
